A hope chest, also called dowry chest, is a piece of furniture traditionally used by unmarried young women to collect items, such as clothing and household linen, in anticipation of married life.

Imported from the northern state of Rajasthan (India) known for its exotic colors, majestic forts and palaces, folk dances and music, sand dunes, carved temples and beautiful havelis. Hand crafted by artisans from salvaged items from ancient architectural sites.

This unique cabinet / sideboard has been created from reclaimed wood and teak wood and has an upper compartment which opens to a large interior space.

'Dhamchiya’ or ‘Damchiya’ is what was an Indian bride’s dresser used in earlier times. Most commonly used in Indian states of Rajasthan and Gujarat, these furniture pieces were used as hope chests to store a bride’s dowry and after the wedding, these were used for storing clothes and other valuables. In modern times like ours, they make for great show stoppers in our hallways and can also be used as kitchen cabinets, etc.

This is an original antique piece and has a beautiful patina.
